Creating or Modifying Custom List

A custom list is a ordered set of movies that you define by either picking individual movies or by filtering your whole collection by movie attributes or both.  Custom lists can be created and attached to individual movies or displays.

One good examples of custom list attached to a movie is to display the movie's sequels and prequels.

A good example of a custom list attached to a display is to group movies suitable for a certain age group like an eight year old child.

Creating or editing a Custom List

To create or edit a custom list attached to a movie, you need to open the Modify Movie Page. To do this first locate the movie you want to edit and display the movie’s Movie Detail Page. In the right hand corner of the page click on the “Edit.” link. This takes you to the Modify Movie Page for that movie.  Next, scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the “Add” button next to the “Custom Lists” label. This brings up the Custom List Dialog.

To create or edit a custom list for a display, open the Settings Page and click on the “Custom lists” tab. Then click “Add Custom List” to create a new list or click on the pencil to edit an existing list

First enter a name that identifies this custom list like “Pixar Movies.”

Below there are three tabs.  The first tab is for adding individual movies.   To do so click in the  “Add Movie” text box and type the title of the movie you want to add.  As you type a drop down list box displays the matching movies.  Select the movie from the list you want to add.  It appears in the list box below.  After you have added a few movies, you can use the arrow buttons on the right to reorder the list or use the to delete a row from the list.

Tip: After selecting a movie from the drop down list, you can press the "Ctrl" key to re-show the drop down list and select another movie.

At the bottom there are two check boxes.   Checking “Add this movie” adds the current movie to the list.  This check box is helpful when the movie is new and not yet part of the autocomplete movie results.

“Share list with all movies in the list” is only enabled when the current movie is added to the list.  When checked the custom list is shared with all movies in the list.   For example, if  “Up”, “WALL-E”, and “Ratatouille” were in the  individual movie list then those three movies would have this custom list displayed in their Detail Page.  Modifying the custom list through one of these movies would affect the list for the other two.

Note:  The “Add this movie” and “Share list with all movies in the list” options only apply to Custom Lists attached to movies.

The second tab is for adding movies by filter. To create a filter click the “Add” button next to the label “Filters.” This adds a new filter row. Click in the first field of the new row and type the name of the attribute you want to filter on. As you type a drop down list appears showing you the matching attributes. Select an attribute and proceed to select the operator. The available operators changes based on your attribute selection. Next, proceed to enter the value of the attribute. Depending on the attribute this also displays possible values as you type. If you make a mistake you can remove the row and start over or just re-input the fields in the row.

Similarly, you can enter “sort by” attributes in ascending or descending order. Use the arrow keys on the right to order the sort attributes.

Leaving both the filter and sort sections empty implies you are not using this section. Also, any filters partially filled will be ignored.

Hint: If you just want to sort your movie collection by a movie attribute without filtering then only provide a sort attribute.

In the example above, the movie collection is filtered to show movies where the company is “Pixar Animation Studios” and the suggested age is less than or equal too 12. The sort order is first by “Year” in descending order then by “Movie Release Date” in descending order.

The last tab is to preview first 100 results of the custom list based on your individual movies and filters. Use this tab to verify your custom list is displaying what you expect. Hovering over any movie title will show a popup with movie details. In pre 0.1.9 release, individual movies appear before the movies selected by the filters. In release 0.1.9+, the sort order in the filters tab overwrites the sort order in the individual movies tab.

After you are satisfied with the results click “OK” and the custom list is added to the Modify Movie Page or Settings Page.  You must click “Save”  on the Modify Movie Page or Settings Page to save the custom lists.
